From Florida Death Row to a Purpose-Driven Life

Turning Lived Experience into Advocacy, Prevention, and Justice

Founded by Herman Lindsey, Herm4Justice is built on the belief that every person deserves to be heard, understood, and given a fair opportunity to succeed. After being wrongfully convicted and later exonerated from Florida’s Death Row, Herman transformed adversity into purpose. Through education, professional training, and firsthand experience, he has dedicated his life to helping individuals, families, and communities navigate difficult circumstances while promoting justice, accountability, and hope.

Why I speak out?

When I was growing up, I never said, ‘I want to be a Death Row Exoneree.’ No child dreams of being wrongfully accused, convicted, or separated from family by a system that was created to protect justice. Yet that reality was forced upon me. Like many others, I was accused of a crime I did not commit and sentenced to spend years of my life living under the weight of a wrongful conviction. The trauma of incarceration, the loss of precious time with loved ones, and the destruction of opportunities are burdens that cannot simply be erased when a conviction is overturned.

My experience exposed me to the devastating impact that miscarriages of justice have on individuals, families, and entire communities. Too often, the laws and policies designed to govern our justice system fail to address the human consequences of wrongful convictions, excessive punishment, and barriers to rehabilitation. Many decision-makers never have to experience the realities faced by people living in poverty, struggling for opportunity, or attempting to rebuild their lives after involvement with the criminal legal system.

Even after my exoneration, I continue to face obstacles that should not exist. The accusation alone still appears on background checks and can affect employment opportunities, housing applications, and other aspects of daily life. Countless individuals who have served their time and demonstrated years of positive contributions to society continue to be judged solely by decades-old mistakes. When a person has worked hard to rehabilitate themselves, stayed out of trouble, and become a productive member of society, outdated records should not permanently block their path forward. Real public safety is strengthened when people are given meaningful opportunities to succeed.

That is why I advocate for policy reforms that promote second chances, accountability, and fairness. I believe we must reexamine background check policies, remove unnecessary barriers to employment and housing, and create systems that recognize growth, rehabilitation, and redemption. Justice should not be measured only by punishment but also by our willingness to help people rebuild their lives.

I speak because change does not happen in silence. Change happens when ordinary people tell their stories, organize their communities, and demand that elected leaders listen. We must develop our own strategies to challenge unjust laws and discriminatory practices. We must educate voters, engage legislators, and ensure that public officials represent the interests of the people rather than political careers. Every voice matters, and every vote has the power to influence the future of our communities.

Too often, people who enter the courtroom become nothing more than a case number. Rarely do we ask: What circumstances led this person here? What challenges have they faced? What support could help prevent future mistakes? How can rehabilitation be encouraged instead of ignored? These are questions that deserve attention. If we want safer communities and a stronger justice system, we must be willing to address the root causes of crime, invest in rehabilitation, and treat people with dignity and humanity.

I share my story not because it is easy, but because it is necessary. My journey from death row to exoneration taught me that justice requires courage, advocacy, and persistence. By speaking out, I hope to inspire others to use their voices, stand against injustice, and work together to build a system that values fairness, accountability, and human dignity for all.

A Heartfelt Thank You

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported, encouraged, and stood beside me throughout my journey. Your compassion, guidance, and belief in me helped me heal from trauma, find strength in difficult moments, and continue moving forward with purpose. Because of your support, I am able to dedicate my life to advocacy, justice, and helping others who face challenges of their own. While I may never be able to name everyone individually, please know that your kindness has made a lasting impact on my life and on the work I do every day. Thank you for helping me turn pain into purpose and for walking this path with me.

I will always be grateful to Mark (My Papa) Elliot, former Executive Director of FADP, for believing in me when I first came home. He recruited me for speaking opportunities and helped give me a voice during one of the most important transitions of my life. More than that, Mark has been a true friend, mentor, and father figure since my release from Death Row.

His guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support have helped shape my journey from surviving injustice to fighting for justice and helping others. Thank you, Mark, for your friendship, wisdom, and belief in me. Your impact on my life will never be forgotten. 🙏🏾❤️

A special thank you to Christine "Sister" Henderson, one of the greatest organizers the Florida death penalty abolition movement has ever had. Your dedication, passion, and commitment to justice have inspired so many. You even volunteered me for speaking engagements without asking first, and because of that, I found my voice and opportunities to share my story with countless others.

Thank you for your friendship, encouragement, and for pushing me beyond my comfort zone. The impact you've had on my life and advocacy journey is truly appreciated. ❤️🙏🏾

A heartfelt thank you to Bridget Maloney,"My Sister", friend, and one of the strongest supporters I've ever had. From her days at FADP to becoming an attorney, Bridget has always been there when I needed her most.

On days when I wanted to give up, somehow Bridget always found a way to reach me, encourage me, and keep me moving forward. She has stood by me through personal challenges, business struggles, and the lifelong journey of healing from the trauma of wrongful conviction and death row.

Thank you for your patience, your guidance, and for always showing up when it mattered most. Your support has helped me become a stronger advocate, leader, and person. I am forever grateful for everything you've done for me.

                              Thank You, Hannah Gorman

A special thank you to Hannah Gorman of the FIU Balance Justice Program for believing in me and helping transform an idea into a meaningful path forward.

I remember when Stephen Harper suggested that I use my lived experience to help criminal defense teams build stronger relationships with their clients. At the time, I honestly thought attorneys wouldn't need someone like me. After all, they had gone to school for this work. But Hannah saw something I didn't see in myself. She embraced the idea, encouraged me, and continuously pushed me forward.

Hannah introduced me to attorneys, opened doors, and helped create opportunities. When I finally had the chance to contribute to a case and saw that my experience could truly make a difference, she immediately went a step further. Knowing I couldn't afford the cost, Hannah made it possible for me to attend Amicus mitigation training at no expense to me.

Her support has gone far beyond professional guidance. She has been a friend, an advocate, and an aggressive pusher who refused to let me settle for less than my potential. Much of the foundation for Herm4Justice Consulting exists because Hannah believed in the value of my experience and helped me turn that experience into a way to serve others.

Thank you, Hannah, for opening doors, creating opportunities, and helping me find a new purpose. I am deeply grateful for your friendship, your faith in me, and all you have done to help me on this journey.

❤️🙏🏾

Thank you for helping me see that my experiences could become a tool for justice and healing.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Witness to Innocence

There are many organizations that speak about justice, but Witness to Innocence is one organization I am proud to say truly cares about the men and women who have survived wrongful convictions and death row. Throughout the years, they have stood by my side during some of the most difficult moments of my life. They have provided support, encouragement, advocacy, and a sense of family when it was needed most.

Today, I am honored to serve as the Executive Director of Witness to Innocence, and I am committed to providing the same support, compassion, and advocacy to other exonerees that was given to me. Having personally experienced the challenges that come after exoneration, I understand how important it is to have an organization that genuinely cares and remains present long after the headlines fade.

Funding has become increasingly challenging in these difficult times, but my commitment to Witness to Innocence extends beyond my role as Executive Director. As a token of my appreciation, I personally pledge to donate 10% of every speaking engagement booked and every case consultation invoice paid to Witness to Innocence to help further its mission.

I encourage everyone who reads this message to visit www.witnesstoinnocence.org and consider making a donation. Witness to Innocence is not an organization that simply uses exonerees' stories and faces to raise money. It is an organization that truly cares, provides meaningful assistance, and remains there for exonerees as they rebuild their lives and continue their journey toward healing.

To everyone at Witness to Innocence, thank you for believing in me, supporting me through my hardships, and allowing me the opportunity to serve others in return. Your work changes lives, and I am forever grateful to be part of this family.
